Can You Really Make Money Blogging?

Let me guess:

I bet it started out like this…

You began reading some blogs regularly, maybe even this one, and you thought “Hey, I could do that! I can start a blog”.

You were full of excitement and plans. You picked a topic that seemed interesting, bought hosting and cursed struggled for a week trying to get your blog to look like the demo.

You wrote three blog posts that first month…

…or maybe even 33 posts in the first six months.

And then the thought finally hit you:

“Now I want to start making money with my blog”.

But Here’s The Kicker

You made a BIG mistake

When you started your blog, you thought that the most important decision you’d make was:

…what you’d write about.

…or the name of your domain.

…or having a great-looking website.

I hate to tell you this:

You Were Wrong

The most important decision you’ll make as a blogger is what your business will be.

The most important decision you’ll make as a blogger is what your business will be.Click To Tweet

It’s true:

The missing piece in almost every blogger’s plans is just how you will earn money consistently over time.

But don’t worry. You and your blog can be rescued.

You can create a plan to make money with your blog…

…even if you have never sold anything before.

The first step?

Listen To Your Readers

Your goal is for your readers to see you as a trusted friend and a valuable resource. Before you sell anything, you need to build a relationship first.

And the key to building that relationship?

Focus on your reader’s needs.

When you can put yourself in their shoes…

…you can understand exactly what they want and how to deliver it to them.

Find Online Conversations

In order to really understand your readers’ problems, you need the hard data that they will actually provide to you themselves.

You need to listen to the conversations they have online.

The easiest way to learn about your audience’s thoughts and feelings is through:

  • blog posts
  • blog comments on other blogs
  • forum postings
  • social media sites
  • Amazon book reviews

Even better, you can ask for the specific data you need by directly asking your readers to take a few minutes to give you feedback.

Online surveys are easy to conduct these days, and there are free tools, like Survey Monkey, which walk you through it step-by-step.

Understand Their Problems

So the key is to listen closely to understand their problems and desires. Selling isn’t about forcing a product down anybody’s throat.

In fact, you’ll be far more successful in the long run and make more sales if you take a completely different approach.

When you empathize with your audience, you can create a marketing message that resonates with them and shows that you’re a responsive blogger that listens and cares.

You can then offer the products and services that your readers are already actively seeking, rather than trying to convince them to buy products they never wanted in the first place.

It’s Never Too Late

Start by listening closely. See what your readers are thinking, feeling and saying while you cruise around the web this week.

  3. Hello Sue,

It's always a pleasure reading your post. You are an amazing personality where it comes to crafting an interesting content.

I was guilty of the points you raised here about bloggers not figuring out ways they intend to make money from their. I was so guilty of that. Additionally, I started building my email list lately. So far, the results have been incredible.

Of all the multiple ways of making money from blogging, selling your own online course is the best thing.

    Keep inspiring men.

  5. Hello Sue,

That exactly the same question I asked my brother (who is a successful blogger) when he told me to start blogging. Yes it the core thing to do that you have in mind what your niche would be for blogging.

Your post reminded me lots of thing that he told. Firstly I didnot listen to him (you know sibling issues 😀 ) then after going through your post I feel that I was wrong. Your post is really great & insightful. Thanks a lot. Have a great day ahead.

  6. Hi Sue,

Yeah, it's true, many bloggers started their blog only seeing by others income and content and think I can also do that. yeah, it's only a piece of content anyone can write.

But, when they start their blog then they actually know what is the blogging and what it takes.

Many bloggers start their blog every day but some of them actually do the long-term business.

I have also started a blog with name and with blogging I'm also pursuing a bachelor degree in engineering. So the problem is, this is the last year of graduation and I have to tell my parents what I'm doing after that.

So, I'm a little bit afraid of telling my parents what I'm doing this year.

Thank you for your great article

    • They won't mind when they find out you are making money! But, I know, parents are tough to deal with about career paths. Good luck, Ashutosh!

  7. So many weird ways how one can make a living doing what you love. Very interesting article. I agree with MP Baruah, finding your niche is one of the most important steps when thinking about becoming a blogger. You can fail at something you don't like so you might as well do what you like.

  8. I've been trying to earn few bucks from Blogging. But failing consistently. Still not giving up!

  9. Hello Ma'am,

I have been reading your blog for a few months now, and I just started my own blog. It is fun, and I'm learning new things every day. So, I love it.

And money making is not my primary goal but, I wanna make a "RESOURCES" page with few affiliate links.

I just wanna understand how things work. As I mentioned before, I don't wanna make money at least for now.

What do you think about that ma'am? Is it a bad idea or I have to start affiliate marketing even from the day one.

Hope to hear from you soon ma'am.

  10. I started off exactly like you write with a lot of blog posts but almost nobody would read them. It's much more technical knowledge about SEO and the set up of webpages as I had thought. I hope I'll get soon back to write instead learning about SEO …

  11. Your tips are always helpful, Sue!
My goal for 2018 is to become a better content creator and become more to the people in my niche market.
One of the most important things I have been learning, blogging, and the search engines, is that high-quality content that solves a specific problem like no other content Especially, now that we have Google's RankBrain AI, super high-quality content is the best way to go.

Thank you for sharing your expertise!

  12. All entrepreneurs fail a few times before making it big. You just have to keep going at it. If nothing seems to work, perhaps take a short break and try again from a different perspective.

  15. I fell into the trap of blogging just to blog with my first attempt. I was able to turn readers into buyers eventually by writing a book, otherwise there was not many other ways to monetize my efforts.

My new blog was started with a business in mind and it is going OK. Your advice to listen to my readers is golden and I can see by doing so I will glean valuable insight into the needs of my readers' so that I can provide solutions to those problems.

  16. I intend to have a blog to have an income with him but I had no idea what to do or where to start.
