4 Incredible Tips to Build a Profitable Blog that Makes Money

Building a better blog isn’t easy.

90% of the people quit blogging within their first 3 months of the journey.

And we all know thousands of new blogs are going live each and every single day. So it’s highly impossible for someone with zero online reputation to build a profitable blog.

We read top blogs to know what’s working for them and what’s not. If you are wondering how to create a successful blog from the scratch, this post is for you.

Building a popular blog isn’t rocket science.

If you look at any popular blog in your niche, you will easily notice one thing: they get a lot of shares, incoming links, and traffic to their blog posts.

If you want to build a profitable blog, follow the same wheel! Here I’m going to share few incredible tips that will help you create a successful blog. Let’s dive into the details now.

Increase your website traffic

Popular blogs get lots of traffic from search engines. If you want to build a great blog, focus on increasing your website search traffic.

Just in case if you’re interested, here’s a great list of most popular Indian blogs including the blog owner, Alexa and PageRank.

Here are few surefire ways to increase your overall blog traffic.

  • Focus on increasing your social shares. The more people who share your content on social media sites like Facebook and twitter the more people visit your sites. So make sure to write great headlines that persuade people to click on your links. Also, provide easy ways to share your blog posts.
  • Use long tail keywords and always do keyword research before writing your blog posts. Search engine optimization is the key to increasing your site traffic and it can’t be done without focusing on keywords.
  • Start writing posts for other blogs in your niche and engage with your peers to increase your online reputation.
  • Blog commenting is the evergreen way to let others easily find your blog. Find out the blogs that use CommentLuv plugin and start commenting on them. Don’t write one or two liner comments, always leave thoughtful comments if you want to increase your website traffic.

 Reach out to more people

Networking is the key when it comes to building a profitable blog online. No one will buy stuff from you if they don’t know you. The only way to increase your brand awareness and sales is through networking.

Reach out every influencer in your niche. Connect with them, build relationships and frequently share their stuff on social media networks.

Here are few networking strategies you can use to build relationships with other bloggers.

  • Attend webinars and join seminars if they’re happening around your place.
  • Start participating in forum discussions. Blogging forums are crowded heavily with other bloggers. That’s where you need to start connecting with others to networking.
  • Use twitter to your benefit. Find and follow all the influencers in your niche. Comment and frequently retweet their stuff to grab their attention.
  • Email people when you find something awesome. Or if you find a broken link on any site, let them know through email. This way you’ll make stronger relationships in the long run.

Launch your own products

Selling information products is the surefire way to make passive income from blogs. Unfortunately, most bloggers don’t focus on creating passive income streams they rather focus on quick earning methods.

If you want to build a better blog that makes money, launch products that help people to solve their problems.

While launching your own information products, keep the following things in mind to get more sales.

  • One of the most effective ways to increase your digital product sales is to build a specific list of email subscribers who are interested in your products and who are ready to buy stuff from you.
  • Take help from the people who are already making money by selling information products.
  • Give commission to the people who promote your products on their blogs. Give up to 80% affiliate commission for every successful sale.

Build your own email list

Email list is perhaps the best asset anyone can build. Ask any successful blogger their biggest mistake in online, most of them will say, “I didn’t build an email list from day 1”. And if you look at top bloggers and analyze their income reports (Example, Pat Flynn), you’ll notice that their major earnings come from by leveraging the power of their email list.

If you want to build a successful blog, make sure to integrate email list from the beginning. Offer an incentive to boost your email sign ups and make sure to add value to the people by sending them useful newsletters often. Don’t pitch your products too often or your subscribers end up unsubscribing from your email lists.

Here are few effective list building tips to boost your email sign ups.

  • Bribe your visitors with a freebie. Freebies like eBooks, videos, infographics etc. attract a lot of people to signing up to your email lists.
  • Use content upgrades to attract the right people to your email list. Offer a freebie that is relevant to your blog post or turn your post into PDF and make it easy for download. This way you can effectively build your list.
  • Use landing pages as they provide less distraction to the visitors. So you will get more conversions on your email list.
  • Showcase testimonials as social proof can instantly build credibility. This helps you easily turn people into subscribers.

 Conclusion

Creating a profitable blog from scratch is not impossible if you are really passionate about helping people. It’s all about considering blogging as a medium to reach out more people and spreading your message.

Consistency is another important factor that determines your blogging success. If you’re willing to put extra hours in taking your blog to the next level, you’ll find out more opportunities. That’s how you become a pro at blogging and marketing.

Let me know if you’ve any more strategies that will help anyone build a profitable blog that makes money.

  1. Great ideas Sue! I would also add for people that are just starting that they can promote affiliate products. I would suggest only promoting products they have used. By promoting affiliate products you will learn what products your readers are interested in and can then crete your own product around these findings.

  4. Hey Anil,

    Very good post here.

Your point about building an email list, your own email list, is spot on. Many people, myself included, didn't know or appreciate how important an email list was. But after a few months into blogging, it was pretty apparent that this was the single most important thing to be a successful blogger.

Again, good post here on Sue's blog.

  6. Thank you Anil for sharing key factors to build a successful blog. It is well said that building a successful blog is not a rocket science. It takes passion for blogging, good marketing strategy and influential behavior of a blogger that lead him/her to the red-carpet of success.

I also believe that a blogger should work for readers and understand what his/her readers expect from his blog.

  7. What can I say Sue, you did it again. Fire in my belly, my mind swirling with enthusiasm. I am reading your blog like a bible now. Following your advise. The count down has begun, six weeks and my first post will go live on my blog. So I am starting from the very beginning. I am not daunted by being a newby, that I came to terms with long ago. I want to work hard; blood, sweat and tears to create this from nothing. And as the blog says people blog for three months and let it go, I will see past that – that I am sure. Today I started preparing my first blog post, with the realisation that I am doing it and I am following a formula. Who's advice? You Sue – from Successful Blogging.

So as of today I will be looking to collect email addresses; if all those who started when the wheel was created – say their one mistake was not collecting emails from the very beginning, well who am I to not take this as precious information.

Anyway I best get back to it, because I am networking and leaving well thought out comments on other blogs, because I am walking to the my blog date. Signing off – the very excited.

    • WhoooHoooo! 6 weeks to lift off for Rachel!

You are making me chuckle but you are correct – get those email addresses!

Good job with the comments. Glad you stopped off here!

      Thanks,
      Sue

    • Thanks, Anne, for you comment!

I use LeadPages – the base program is enough and it's $37/month. I've been using them since they started! Also, ThriveThemes.com has good pages – a little harder to use than LeadPages (they are very easy to use).

  8. Thanks Anil, What an excellent post! I love how you mention the importance of meaningful comments. It is obvious when people are simply trying to leech onto your link juice. They suffer in the long run as others do not click on their blogs to read more about them since they never shared anything interesting or even a hint of personality in their bland comment. One question…why is commentluv a suggestion? Is this because it makes it easier to develop a forum like comment space? Does this impact SEO in any way? Finally…you are so right about freebies. If you say free people seem to go bananas. Great article!

Thanks so much for your comment on Anil's post. Excellent point on comments and link juice.

CommentLuv does impact SEO as you get a 'do-follow' link from the larger blogs that you are commenting on – good for Google!

  12. We are super excited to be included in your email listing. Each week opens up a new door for us as we begin a new journey within our company through blogging. We have followed several of your steps and are already seeing results, just in the past month. We especially enjoy that you keep your advice short and simple, right to the point. It's all comes down to work at the end of the day and if you stick to it the reward will come. Can't wait for next week's post!

  13. Anil and Sue,

Great post! Creating an email list has to be one of the biggest ways to grow your traffic. It creates loyal readers and future customers. Eventually they can become brand ambassadors for your site.

Social media is also a big traffic lead. While SEO is important, I find that I get the most traffic from Pinterest. It goes to show that images and a compelling headline works in grabbing fresh new readers.

    Thanks,

  14. Can you tell me what a longtail keyword is? I understand how to search keywords in google ads but have not heard of longtail keywords. This is all great advice and I was also wondering about guest blogging. Do I ask if I can guest blog or ask someone to guest blog or both? I have been wanting to do this but was unsure of which approach is best? Thanks so much for the great information!

    • Hi, Jenay,

Anil will also give his opinion but I think of longtail keywords as phrases. So a phrase for me is "how to get traffic to your blog" – much longer than "traffic" or "blogging". You get less people looking for that phrase, but you have a better shot of being higher in Google.

Guest blogging is great – you can do both! Guest blogging and what I call 'reverse guest blogging' where someone blogs on your site, like Anil did here.
Both approaches work well because you get new 'eyeballs' on your site.

      Thanks for your comment today.
      Sue

  15. Really useful and so relevant to my 2015 goals. I've added you to my Twitter list to continue to get your posts, information, and general musings.

    • Hi, Mayank,

Thanks for your comment! I think the best way to build a list is through a pop-up that doesn't show till someone is ready to leave your site (exit intent).

I use optinmonster but sumome.com is free!

      Thanks!
      Sue

  16. Hi Elna,
I couldn't agree with you more about the importance of Pinterest! When I added the app on my phone I didn't realize how much it would impact my style. I am constantly on there finding inspiration from my favorite bloggers in both women's style and menswear! I find that the blogs that I follow the most have incredible original imagery. For the past few years, Instagram has been my go-to for showcasing my own work and that of my digital magazine (I also don't see that trend slowing down), but I find myself wanting to master Pinterest as well! Finding what really matters to you and linking with those sites and tools that emphasize your strengths is key.
    Best,
    Maliha

  19. Setting up a blog is the easy part, what comes next is a different ball game altogether. It takes a lot of commitment, patience, technical know-hows and most importantly, the passion to see you through the ups and downs of blogging.

The above guide isn’t the ultimate guide to make money online from the get go but the awareness of the above know-hows is the prerequisites to building a successful blog and bringing you one step closer to your dreams of making money online from your blog.

  20. I love blogging! It feels so good knowing that you earn amply and passively through something you love doing the most. Thank you for sharing this.

I will tweet your post. Thanks a lot for sharing.

    Thanks a lot!

  23. Hi Stefan, yes making money through a blog isn't easy as it sounds. I have started affiliate marketing and now I am able to generate revenue from my blog. I deal in security coupons like norton and other online shopping deals which my visitors like to use.

  24. I like how you mention the idea of using keyword research before writing a post. High volume long tail search phrases can drive a lot of traffic to your site if you rank well and thus give you an opportunity to convert those visits into a lead or even a conversion. First time here but very impressed.

  25. Awesome read, super informative! I agree about working on your email list, it takes a ton of effort to get it built up but the benefits are huge!

  26. My blog – I am going to use for selling my own product and you helped me to make things clear. Affiliate marketing is also a good way to make money from blogging. Thanks for your post.
