Video Fears Overcome and Problems Solved

All Your Video Fears Overcome and Problems Solved

“Did you know that 50% of the Internet traffic after 5pm is currently video?”
Krizia de Verdier, Create Profitable Videos Online Training

Me neither. I know that video is important for driving Internet traffic to your blog – that’s why I try to use it here and on my travel blog Get In the Hot Spot. I know that videos and YouTube are a great way to connect with new readers and clients. I know that many people use YouTube to search for information and prefer watching videos to reading text.

But I didn’t know that video usage was that high. I guess that’s why the Internet slows down after 5pm.

It looks as if online videos are replacing TV time and reading which online video is a trend that is growing as more and more people get online and discover how easy and fun it is to get information on video.

So it’s a no brainer that we bloggers should create videos to connect with our target audience and promote our blogs or products.

Even without these statistics we all know in our hearts that we should be creating videos, but we aren’t doing much about it because we’re scared. There are some big fears to overcome but it’s easily done once you set your mind to it.

Video Making Fears

1. You’re not good on camera

Solution: Although many people are confident on camera others aren’t. But you don’t need to feature in your own videos as a talking head. You can learn how to create an effective video by showcasing a slide-show and adding your voice-over.

I’m trying to overcome my fear though and be seen in front of the camera. While I may be the wrong side of 40, have a funny accent and nasal intonation those things don’t need to matter. The most important thing is to be yourself and show your passion for your expertise. I’m not saying that I’ve got there yet myself as I am very conscious of being videoed but I know I can only get over that if I squish through my fear and wade out the other side a little bit better each time.

2. You don’t have the technical know how

Solution: Either you can learn how to create videos using whatever technology (inbuilt computer video or home video) then get the software and learn how to edit them.

Or you can outsource the project, contracting someone who can do it fast and effectively to save you time.

I prefer to take the time to learn how to do something myself. That way if I want to outsource it in the future I know what the value is for me, how much time it will save and how much return I can hope to see.

3. Expense and Time

Solution: The software I use for my video editing is free (Microsoft Live Video Maker) and of course the more videos I make the faster I get at creating and publishing them.

Yes, the 30 second video entry that made me a finalist in the Samsung Global Bloggers Contest took four hours to make from woah to go and I had some help from my 13 year old son – thank you darling Luke for filming me and helping with editing and sound effects!

But writing a blog post takes between two and eight hours too. Although video can have a much higher impact than text or static images alone.

Samsung are smart because they want to find bloggers who can create videos and make a powerful connection with that growing audience through video. Of course Samsung are smart, they’re a global technology and communications company but with blogging so are you and there’s no reason your videos can’t compete with them or with their global bloggers.

Learning anything takes time but you can learn how to make effective videos if you make time for it and with the right training it won’t take as long as you thing.

Hey Annabel,

That is mind blowing. I never knew that (I agree with it because often times I like to spend my evening time watching or listening to blogging related videos/podcasts).

Yeah, one reason why many people don’t do video is because of fear. I have done a few videos but not in front of the camera. Most of my videos are presentations – I use Camtasia to capture the screen and record audio with it.

I only did one video this year and that was for a video blogging challenge. That challenge not only got me to do videos but also helped me to get started with pod casts (I did 2 podcasts as a result of that).

Another thing we need to remember while doing videos or podcasts is the importance of consistency just like normal piece of content (That reminds me – I haven’t done videos or podcasts in a while).

I appreciate you sharing the course, but I think it is best to learn ourselves (Especially with things like video and podcasts). It helps us to learn faster (sure, we may bump into some problems along the way, but with millions of other bloggers out there to help us, we shouldn’t worry that much).

Anyways, thank you for the wonderful post,

Jeevan Jacob John

Hi Jeevan,

Doing screeen casts with Camtasia is a great option and often way more interesting and educational for viewers than just watching a talking head.

While there are benefits to learning from yourself, especially the feeling of achievement you get when you’ve finally cracked it I think the learning experience is faster, easier and more fun when you follow a course.

With someone to guide you you learn quicker, get less frustrated and are more motivated to stick with it:)

Thanks for this! I’ve been dabbling in vlogging a little (although been slack lately!) I love it.

Thanks for the tips, they’re very helpful, and I’ll be looking over the course, because I would like to learn more about it.
