How To Make It Stupidly Easy For Readers To Subscribe To Your Email List

One of the most important things you can do as a blogger is to grow your email list. The fastest way to grow your list is to create a lead magnet your readers want, get lots of traffic, and make it really easy for readers to subscribe to your list.

The more places you give them to subscribe, the easier it is for your readers to opt-in to get your emails. Here are some of the best places to put your opt-in forms to exponentially grow your email list.

1. Above The Fold/In The Header Of Your Blog

If you want to make sure your readers see your opt-in box, place it right below the header of your blog. When you put your opt-in box above the fold of your blog, it’s the first things your readers will see. As soon as they get to your blog, they’ll already be thinking about subscribing!

Derek Halpern calls this a Feature Box. For a higher converting Feature Box, choose a great headline and put a very noticeable button with it. (See mine above.) You want your headline to describe exactly what your readers will get when they download your lead magnet.

Bonus Tip: Use LeadPages (Affiliate link) to easily create your opt-in button and deliver your lead magnet to your subscribers. I use LeadPages for all of my Feature Boxes and I’ve grown my blog by thousands of subscribers as a result.

2. After The Introduction And At The End Of Your Blog Post

So many bloggers make the mistake of creating a content upgrade and then putting their opt-in box for it at the far bottom of their blog post. Content upgrades are great list builders, but only if your readers actually see them! Many of your readers won’t read to the end of your post, so when you put your opt-in box there, you lose out on a lot of potential subscribers.

That’s why I suggest putting your opt-in box in two places in your blog post: after the introduction and at the end. That way, if a reader wants to grab your content upgrade, they don’t have to read your entire post to get it. And if they do take the time to read your whole post, it will be waiting for them at the bottom, as well.

3. A Floating Bar Across The Top Or Bottom Of Your Blog

Another place to put your opt-in box is in a bar at the top or bottom of your blog. OptinMonster calls this a floating bar. When you put your lead magnet in a floating bar, your readers will continuously be reminded about it as they read your blog.

Even if they don’t think they want your lead magnet when they start reading, by the time they’ve read some of your great content, they’ll be ready to subscribe and your floating bar will be there to make it really easy for them. With OptinMonster, you can also show different floating bars to people who have already subscribed so that you can showcase new lead magnets or convert them into customers.

4. Landing Page

I see so many new bloggers make the mistake of not creating landing pages for their lead magnets. Landing pages are extremely important because their sole purpose is to get your readers to sign up for your list. Because the entire page is focused on your lead magnet, a reader is much more likely to subscribe to your list on a landing page than anywhere else on your blog.

You can also use landing pages to see which of your social media platforms are performing the best. For example, you can create an Instagram-specific landing page so that you can track how many Instagram followers are subscribing to your list there.

LeadPages makes it really easy for you to create conversion optimized landing pages. You can also duplicate your landing pages so that you can customize them depending on where your readers are coming from.

5. Welcome Gate

SumoMe has an amazing feature called a Welcome Mat. When a visitor first comes to your website, instead of seeing your homepage or blog post, they will land on your Welcome Mat.

It’s like a very simple landing page that invites readers to subscribe before enjoying your content. Then, as soon as they scroll down, your Welcome Mat disappears and they can see the rest of your blog. A Welcome Mat guarantees that your readers will see your lead magnet and have the opportunity to subscribe to your email list without forcing them to go to a separate landing page. Put your most enticing lead magnet in it and watch your email list grow.

6. Scroll Box

Unlike the full-screen lightbox popups that many bloggers use, scroll boxes are unobtrusive. They politely invite your readers to subscribe instead of filling their screen when they are trying to read your blog posts.

For example, you might have noticed the scroll box at the bottom right of my blog. It is definitely noticeable for people who want to subscribe, but if they want to wait until they’re done reading your post before subscribing, they can do that, too.

Most lead generation apps, including SumoMe and OptinMonster, have polite scroll boxes as a part of their package. You can also decide how far down your reader scrolls before seeing your scroll box, and you can specify which scroll boxes appear on which blog posts.

    I totally agree that “one of the most important things you can do as a blogger is to grow your email list” because in my humble opinion, as bloggers or other content marketers, the email list is our greatest asset! However, growing the email list can be a herculean task, especially if one doesn’t know what to do! So kudos for showing us how best to maximize the placement of our lead magnets to drive up the all important signup rates.

    The only one of the strategies suggested by that I am not currently using is the “welcome mat” which I am going to implement right away.

    Exactly. A very pertinent post. You want people to think deeply about your content but you don’t want them to have to think about “where to sign up” or “where to find content?”

    My point would be also take this principle when categorizing your content, make the categories simple to understand, not cute or abstract, so someone knows exactly that they will find when they go there.

    Thank you for these reminders to add to my checklist. I just did, in fact, some changes to my front page of the blog a few days ago. Especially the one to get sign-ups above the fold.

    This helped right away. I was thinking that since I use Instagram as my main channel, it’s pretty stupid to not show the optin form on the top since Instagram attracts a lot of mobile users.

    I have:

    – a pop up form
    – sidebar opt in form
    – sidebar slider form that moves in from the left when you reach about 1/2 way down the page
    – PUSH subscriber form

    All no-brainers as I have added hundreds of email subscribers and over 100 PUSH subscribers since sticking to this strategy. Gotta be clear and bold to grow that list more easily. Super tips Sue!

    Hi Sue. This is exactly what I’m working on right now. So far I have my opt-in form in the sidebar but I know things are generally ignored there. It needs to be in the flow of the page to be seen, like in your content.

    I’m going to have a landing page to direct traffic from social media to. A separate one for each channel makes complete sense so that you can see which source and which messages are working the best. I hadn’t thought of that.

    Agree with everything on this list. I’ve found that, at least for our blog, the scroll bar tends to work better than the pop-up without increasing our bounce rate. Ultimately, we want users to ENJOY their time on the site, so if they’ve scrolled down, they’ve shown interest. They may, by that point, WANT to be offered a chance to sign-up. This is far more user-friendly than the immediate pop-up, through which he or she may not even know who or what you are. Like the title of this says, make life easy for the reader. That includes usability.

    Just like you, I use a full-width format for my posts. I use 3 opt-in boxes (my posts are usually long), first at the beginning, second in the middle and third at the end.

    Btw, I tried SumoMe in the past but it made my site slower. :S
    I changed to Thrive Leads instead and it’s now blazing fast. 😀

    Nice Informative Post!

    One of the best things you can do in building your platform, regardless of the business you are in, is to build your email list. And by that I mean an email database of those people who are interested in your product, service, ideas or offerings.

    All the 6 places mentioned by you to add opt-in box to one’s blog are nice, i prefer #6 scroll box. It doesn’t bother the readers of our blog.

    Great tips for knowing where to add the email opt-in forms. I think it’s important to test out different placements on your blog and see which ones are actually converting.

    I used to have one on my sidebar. However, it never got any conversions. So I removed it so I could make room for other things without cluttering up my sidebar.

    I currently use 4 different placements on my sidebar. My biggest converter is the lightbox.

    I was actually going to remove it at one point, but it’s doing its job.

    I’ve always known about the importance of growing a list, but ironically, I help others’ grow their lists and not mine.

    Last month, it all changed though. Turned the website home page upside down, using SumoMe to collect email addresses, using Drip for email marketing automation, giving away relevant content upgrades, and more.

    True that. I now believe that If there was one thing I’d do differently, starting with putting things in place to grow my list would be the first thing I’d do.

    Sometimes I feel plain stuck on stupid. Just close to a month ago, I recently installed a Hello header to inspire people to submit their e-mail addresses to get newsletter updates. I don’t know why I didn’t do this a long time ago, because I would’ve had thousands of newsletter subscribers which would have easily resulted in instant affiliate commissions. I’m hoping for the best nowadays to collect email addy’s overnight hopefully as I strive to create “Evergreen content,” and sticking to the plan of creating Evergreen content with the intent of getting more eyeballs on the site and more e-Subscribers.

    Great post here. I used the sticky header, sidebar and below post during the end of the year till about a month ago. The result was something I less expected. Like, it was superb.

    I won’t fail to bring it back as I’ve learn a more enhanced way to slide that in for more advanced results from this post. However, subscribers has a great benefit when it comes to blogging. Having lots of active subscribers is a great catch when it comes to e-mail marketing.

    Great Article, This helped right away. I was thinking that since I use Instagram as my main channel, it’s pretty stupid to not show the options form on the top since Instagram attracts a lot of mobile users.
