Is guest posting a good way to get new blog readers? And How did I score guest posts on top blogs like Zen Habits, Problogger, Copyblogger and Dumb Little Man? Those are questions many new and not-so-new bloggers ask me and they’re smart questions because guest posting on top blogs has helped me grow my blog more than anything else.
I’m not really a genius of any kind but writing guest posts and getting them published on top blogs has helped me connect with hundreds of engaged readers who’d never have heard of me otherwise so I recommend guest posting to all bloggers.
As a blogger you want people to visit and read your blog. If no one does what’s the point in writing a blog? It’s like talking to a wall. So how can you find new and targeted readers when you’re just starting out blogging?
If you’re a new blogger you’ve probably been studying how to write good blog copy because you’ve heard that content is king. It’s partially true.
As a blogger you need to understand how to write well. You need to write with your readers in mind and help them solve their problems, but that’s not all. You also have to learn how to:
- write killer blog headlines;
- draw your readers into the blog post;
- make your blog posts scannable;
- persuade people to subscribe to your blog.
Guest Posting for Blog Power
Let’s say you’ve spent six months studying and practicing writing guest posts and you’re getting good at it now. Of course, there’s still room for improvement, there always is when you’re a writer, but let’s assume that your blog posts are B+ material.
You have some subscribers too but they’re growing slowly. Absurdly slowly in fact. Maybe you’re aiming for 1000 subscribers after the first 12 months of blogging, like I did, but at your current rate of growth you’ve worked out it’ll take you five years of blogging to get them. It’s tough and you need things to pick up fast.
In your heart you know what you really need is advertising. When your blog’s got more subscribers and readers the quality of your writing will mean that word of mouth (or mouse) advertising will kick in, but until then you need a break. You need something to give you and your blog a kick start.
Imagine a pay-per-click campaign with Google adwords where any time someone searches for your topic they see an ad for and link to your blog. It’d be great to see your blog advertised on the side of a bus or twenty. A slot on prime time TV would help too, preferably during that doggy show when all the dog lovers you’re targeting with your dog training tips blog will see it.
But get real. These types of ad campaigns are expensive and you shouldn’t spend too much money on a blog that probably won’t earn you any money in the short term. Or ever if you can’t get more people to visit it.
So let’s go back to your blog writing skills. If I asked you to give away your very best writing to someone else for them to use on their blog would you? It’s not very appealing I know. You’ve probably spent a while writing your blog post, even longer editing and polishing it to perfection, not to mention that the expertise you’ve drawn on took a lifetime to come by.
Now, I bet if I said I could get you a free advertising deal which put your brand or blog in front of your target audience you’d be more interested.
Well, with blogging giving away your best writing and getting free advertising are the same thing ~ it’s called guest posting. You just need to change your mentality and stop thinking of guest posting as giving away your best work and start thinking of it as free prime time advertising. It’s definitely worth giving away your best blog posts because one guest post on a top blog like Zen Habits or Problogger may send a few thousand new readers your way.
Choosing a Blog for Your Guest Post
Ideally, you should pick a blog with a similar audience to the one you’re looking for and readers who are interested in the topic you blog about. Find out which blogs have the most subscribers. Some blogs kindly advertise their RSS subscribers to make it easy for you. If not you can use Technorati or Alexa to give you an idea. I’ve also found that if you write bloggers a quick email telling them you love their blog, would like to write a guest post for them and wonder how many subscribers they have, most of them will spill the beans.
Don’t focus on just one blog for your guest posts. Run with them as many suitable blogs as you can find to reach as wide an audience as possible. Try creating a list of potential blogs to host your guest posts, ranking them in order of the most to least desirable then start at the top and work your way down.
Don’t worry if you can’t find enough blogs in your niche. Even if you have a surf blog you could still find more readers by writing a guest blog post about blogging with a surf slant called The Surfer’s Guide to Blogging.
My blog has two main topics – empowerment and entrepreneurship – which allows me to cover a lot of different topics. The main key to consistency is my writing style. I focus on helping people get what they want in life and try to keep the tone of my writing positive and inspiring. That upbeat tone ogf my blog has helped many upbeat readers or people who want inspiration and motivation to find me. No matter what the topic, every blog post I write helps people get what they want out of life.
Guest Posting on Top Blogs – How to Score One
1. Read their blog. Really study the language and style they use, the headlines, the spacing and length of paragraphs. Some bloggers have buzz words that they use again and again. If you can spot some and use them in your guest post for them, subconsciously they might relate more to your writing and feel it makes a good fit for their blog. When you write your guest post for them use the same style, language and formatting they do so they can instantly see that your post fits in and will appeal to their readers.
2. Leave comments for the blog owner. It’s like a virtual calling card that lets a top blogger know you visit their blog. Better yet if you can add to their blog post by leaving an interesting comment they’ll know you read their posts carefully. This will naturally endear you to them but beware that comments with links in or key words instead of your real name will probably annoy them and have the opposite effect. The aim is to make them notice you’re an engaged reader, not to make them think of you as a pain in the butt.
3. Connect on Twitter or Facebook. Retweet their posts and answer their questions on Twitter or comment on their Facebook page.
4. Arouse their curiosity. After a respectable amount of time, when you’re sure they know who you are and what you blog about try sending them a quick tweet suggesting a guest post. Hopefully you’ll get a reply to something like “@BlogGod Got a cool guest post idea for your blog. Would you like to hear more?”
5. Email the whole guest post. Even if they don’t get back to you on Twitter you can still email them your guest post. Make sure it really is an example of your best work then edit and check it carefully. It needs to be word perfect. You want to make sure that you minimise work for the host blogger so you can format the post in simple HTML by writing it in a draft blog post on your blog then pasting the HTML into the body of the email for them. Copy how they present guest posts on their blog with a byline like “Editor’s note: guest post by Annabel Candy” and a couple of sentences about you at the end of the post including one or two links to your blog.
Write a short email like this:
Subject line: Guest post – TITLE HERE (Anything in capital letters you need to customise)
Dear BLOG GOD,
Here’s a guest post I’ve written specially for NAME THEIR BLOG – TITLE OF YOUR POST (XXXX words). I think it will go down well with your readers and give them some useful information about THE TOPIC OF YOUR POST.
I write a blog called NAME YOUR BLOG about YOUR TOPIC and I’d love to have my writing featured on NAME THEIR BLOG.
I’ve pasted the post below. It’s all formatted in HTML which I hope will make it easy for you, but if there’s anything else I can do to help you just let me know.
Many thanks for taking the time to read my post. I’m really excited about working with you.
Best wishes,
YOUR NAME AND SURNAME
6. Keep trying. Hopefully this will work but if it doesn’t try again. If you haven’t heard from them within two weeks they’re probably not interested but resend your email just in case. If it still doesn’t work move down your list of blogs you’d like to guest post for, alter the post for the next best blog and keep trying. In the end you’ll succeed.
Now all you need to do is make sure your blog looks good, that it will appeal to the influx of new visitors and that you encourage them to subscribe so that they become regular readers.
Getting new readers is hard work but it’s worth it and if you want to get new readers for your blog, guest posting is the best way.

Well I was going to ask you this same question, but your blog post beat me to it! And believe it or not, your strategy sounds right on par with what I expected – which means really good!
My one slightly different strategy has been to create great content that can work for a few blogs – likely, they all have something in common to you.
Tailor the images/resource content/etc to that exact blog, put it in a Google doc so it is as seamless as possible to access, and write a short e-mail. If they don’t get back to you after X amount of time, cycle to the next blogger. Worst case scenario, you post it on your own blog.
Thanks for the post! With these great tips maybe one day I’ll post on CNN.
Hi Ross, great to hear from you – it sounds like a good strategy. Some blogs have guest posting guidelines (like mine) and ask for a pic but I only send one if they request it. I think the biggest mistake I make is letting them hang too long with X blogger when I should cut my losses and send them on to another likely candidate:)
Great — if not ‘perfect’ — article. Your writing style and positivity is inspiring. Not possible for me to add anything of value to your topic at this time. No experience here with submitting a guest post. However, your suggestions surely would be helpful if/when writing and securing a guest post in the future.
Can say, “blog comments add value to the topic” (no ‘pain in the butt’ link included). Making the effort to write an interesting comment, or attempting to answer a substantive question, on another blogger’s post can add value to the topic and generally engage readers from other areas of interest. Perhaps even cultivate discussions among commenters of diverse backgrounds
…
Hi QwkDrw, Perfect, surely not, I’m quite hard on myself! Love your comment about comments. I think what you’re mentioning is the ideal scenario where the commenters comment on each other’s comments…. if you know what I mean. I need to come up with something controversial to kick start that kind of discussion:) Thank you!
If you are interested, my thoughts about blog comments can be read here:

(Apologies, if you have already read my post regarding comments — the above does link to my blog.)
Hi there Annabel
you’ve got some great ideas there, tried lots of things over the years and just decided to blog for myself and if it flowers into what you are saying I would be very happy indeed!
Cheers
Lydia
Hi Lydia, lovely to see you here. I like your attitude. I think everyone should have a blog but it has to be fun and if that’s the main reason for doing it you can’t lose. I hope your blog blossoms:)
Thanks Annabel, I’ve been trying to pluck up the courage to face the idea of guest posting head on, and it’s so useful to have the process set out step by step!
Hi Hannah, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I think you need to read my article Give Fear the Finger: http://www.successfulblogging.com/give-fear-the-finger-and-live-the-life-you-want/ What have you got to lose? It will definitely help you improve your writing skills and give you a confidence boost to see your work featured on another blog. Start small and go from there. I’ll be cheering you on.
Thanks Annabel, for this great post. Guest posting was really a problem for me, now it’s a bit better. Nice tips!
Hi Roman, people keep requesting guest posts on my blog recently and I’ve realised how hard to manage them it is. I expect many times the blogger simply marks read later and then forgets them, nothing more sinister than simple business explains their lack of response. It’s great when occasionally you get an explanation for the knock back so you can write something they like better next time.
This post is just what I need right now. My blog is a relatively fresh blog and after studying some other successful blogs, most of them do almost the same thing to be where they are right now. And one of it is guest posting.
I have never tried guest posting so I could not really give a tip on this topic but I think, the very first step for me now is really to write a kick ass content and maintaining the hidden message aka “the voice” of my own blog.
Thanks for this posting Annabel !!
Hi KC, great to see you here. Yes, concentrate on writing great stuff for your own blog and letting your voice shine through. It took me a while to gain the confidence to write from the heart. Thanks for stopping by!
Epic post! I’ll need to try firing through these tips as soon as I am happy with how my blog is coming along. Glad to be subscribed Annabele =D
Hi Liam, lovely to see a new subscriber here too and great to hear you’re happy with your blogging progress. I think I’m too hard on myself sometimes… I need to remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint:)
Hi Annabel, As a relatively new blogger, I found this really interesting. Haven’t been game enough to approach anyone to guest at this stage, but I’ll definitely bear these tips in mind when I do. Thanks for sharing – and good luck with your dream to be a fulltime blogger. Allison
Hi Allison, I think it’s best to invest time in setting up your own blog to perfection first. The host blogger will probably check it out before deciding whether to run your post or not and if they don’t like what they see they might not go for it.
Love the post! Guest posts are also such a neat way to connect, aside from helping get the word out – reminds us that we need one another to make this all happen! Thanks for the tips and inspiration!
Hi Corey, it’s definitely a team effort. No blogger is an island, we have to get out there and make connections. Guest posting’s a great way to do it.
Hi, Annabel
Great post and I love your blog it’s very inspiring with great tips.
I just started a blog, and am still trying to find my own voice and trying to write great post for the blog. I don’t have the chops yet do to do a guest post for someone, but would the opposite also work, to invite a guest blogger to post something on my blog?
Hi Christine, so many new readers commenting this week. Re your question, I cover it in detail for Anne. Yes, if they promote it and have a lot of readers!
Yes, I know your right. You know your writing seems so focused lately. Not that it wasn’t before but your really hitting the nail on the head and hammering your niche!
I love the fact that you have not been blogging that long and your track record of success is still fresh.
You have been and still are in the trenches and are willing to share.
Thanks for another great post.
Henri Junttila at Wake Up Cloud has been saying the same thing.
Love your work! Tweet it up people!!
Hi Randall, I am focusing more and more on entrepreneurship and believe blogging is a vital part of that – a decent blog can help selll products and services better than anything for a reasonable investment. Thanks as always for your enthusiasm!
Thank you for sharing that insightful article. I will tweet and f.b. it. I hope your blog activity experiences leaps and bounds! Great info.
Hi Chantel, thank you! I hope yours does too:)
#5 is beauty-full
I like the fact you shared a concrete example. A lot of times I find that little Devil really is lurking in the details.
Hi J.D. – I think it makes it easier. No point explaining all that if people can’t get the blogger’s attention. Have you tried it?!
I have a comment and a question!
I have only been blogging for about six weeks but already guest posted once (it was a blog about shoes; not in my niche, but definitely fun!). I also was interviewed for a podcast on another blog which I think of as a guest post. I would certainly love to do more guest posting, because frankly, I love to write!
I was wondering what you think about the effects of having other’s guest post on your own blog, especially if you’re just starting out. I already have two people tentatively scheduled to guest post on my blog. The way I look at it is, when they guest post on my blog they are obviously going to advertise that to their network, which will hopefully drive traffic to my blog and maybe get some subscribers.
One last comment: I am jealous how many comments you get! As much as I urge people to leave comments (in every post) – I rarely get them. I realize the people reading my blog are not bloggers themselves, and maybe don’t get the importance of it for a blog. In addition, they are generally busy (home-schooling) moms, so stopping to leave a comment just might not be efficient for them. Ah well, I am just trying to continue to follow the rules: good content; connecting socially; commenting on other’s blogs
– hopefully it will all eventually pay off!
Hi Anne, thanks for the lovely long comment. If you host a guest post you should get some new visitors if the guest poster mentions it on their blog and on Twitter etc. But will they? It’s not certain. Also if they don’t have many followers on their blog the results may be disappointing. Try to find people who have the same or more visitors as you and that should help. I hope you can find other homeschooling blogs to help you. Another way for you to find new readers could be forums – by replying to people’s questions and starting your own discussions. It is all time-consuming but I haven’t found any shortcuts. I agree it is hard, especially if your readers are older and not au fait with social media.
I wonder if your comments are proportionate to the amount of readers you have. Do you get any. In my experience getting the first one’s the hardest part:) Have you tried asking questions at the end of the post or really pouring your heart out. That often gets a response!
Thanks for the tips Annabel. Nothing can beat guest posts
Hi Dia, I’d love to know which blogs you’ve guest posted on and recommend!
Hi Annabel,
So far, I haven’t guest posted, but I’m planning to start doing guest posts starting in August. But, based on the research that I’ve done, doing guest posts is one of the best ways to gain traffic
Priceless advice, especially the point about giving away your BEST writing and receiving great advertising in return. I’ve wondered about that.
Hi Sandra, it feels all wrong at first but then you realise it’s so right:) How else could I connect with those lovely readers?:)
Mornin Annabel, Hope that your week is starting out great. Clear points that you’ve made. Like Ann, My site is new also and I seam to just get caught up with trying to get It looking comfortable. Anyway I like your point here and guest posting was something that I have read to be a great way to get some advertising. I feel for what Ann has said about people being just to busy.
Thanks for the Tips
V.H.
Hi Vern, I cut down posts on my own blog to make time for the odd guest post. Great to see you here, even though the sigh says you’re not here:) Lol.
Hey Annabel,
I read this post over on Brazen Careerist, but wanted to comment over here. Anyway, any thoughts on guest posting if you write on a broad array of topics? In your opinion, is it better to write for a similar themed blog or could you write for something more niche? Thanks!
Cheers,
Greg
Hi Greg, thanks for coming here and leaving your comment. I love that:) Well, in my experience if you write on an array of topics like I do (an we bloggers aren’t supposed to!) you won’t find many (or any) blogs covering the same topics. So spread your net wide and write for the different niche blogs. Hopefully you can attract people who are interested in business and travel/parenting and business/social media and success – there’s a lot of overlap.
I’m not sure if I answered your question so do try again if I haven’t nailed it yet:)
I loved this post. I actually think that my guest post-ability is at about a B+ at the moment. I think the way you laid out your thought process here I’ll have enough to kick my posting game to at least an A-. I also really appreciated the feed back you gave to Anne Galivan. I’ve had quite a few guest posters write for me and while I’m happy to have them the gains from their own readership is pretty minimal. Thanks for another great post!
Hi Nunzio, I’m B+ too. There’s always room for improvement. You need to know it the other blog has a low readership you won’t get many new readers if you write for them or vice versa, especially if they don’t promote their post on your blog. That’s why you should aim for big blogs. I know you can do it if you want to. Lots of new commenters here today and lovely to see you here again:) Thanks!
Hi Annabel,
Thanks for the helpful advice you give to all of us. I’ve guest posted a couple of times and have been asked to post about a one-star Michelin restaurant in the southwest of France. My blog is about being Gutsy in life, and my main focus is to get an audience for my memoir: A Gutsy Move: Rediscovering the Meaning of Life in Belize. I have two questions if you have time:
1). I have many expat and fellow writer followers, but they are not necessarily the target audience for my upcoming memoir. Any tips for writers on how to “grab” their target audience’s attention?
2). You are using Thesis for Wordpress, and I am spending time comparing the benefits of Thesis. I also read that Headway is the way to go. I find all of this too much to learn while I’m still revising my memoir. Any useful suggestions? I don’t want to fall in the trap of getting some outside company to do the work for me with Thesis, and then not being able to handle changes alone. Please direct me to some previous posts if you’ve already covered this. Thank you.
Hi GW, 2 questions, great to seeing you live up to your Gutsy name and thanks for joining us! I already want to read your book? Did you read about our 18 months in Central America? Here if you’re interested: http://www.successfulblogging.com/live-your-dream-in-a-material-world/
OK, the questions:)
1. Why aren’t they your prospective readers? I would have thought they were. How about blogs on Belize or blogs for people who want to move overseas like Escape Artist?
2. No comment on Headway. Haven’t tried it. Very happy with Thesis. If your blog is set up by a reputable company like mine (http://mucho.com.au/) then they should train you so you can update it yourself without going back to them and spending more money every five minutes. Happy to help more with WP and Thesis if you need more details do email me:)
Great to see you here and I wish you luck with that book. I for one will read it, I love travel memoirs and would love to help more writers promote their work online:)
I have been lucky to be accepted as guest writer on some high traffic blogs but I’ve not been lucky enough to be accepted on those top blogs you have mentioned. I like the methods you have shared here and the sample request letter. Perhaps I need more patience and perseverance to push through.
Thanks for this encouraging post.
Hi Walter, I doubt it was luck, I guess it was because you’re a good writer with some great stories to tell and some valuable lessons to impart. Patience and perseverance is definitely key. Being stubborn and refusing to give up is another way of putting it:) Mea culpa and I’m glad!
Just came across your blog, Annabel, via Chris Guthrie’s blog. Right now, I have 5 blogs opened up in my browser window, and, I must say, I’ll be adding yours to my daily reading. Great job with your blog, and look forward to reading/commenting more!
Howie
Hi Howie, Hooray for you and Chris and me:) Looks like a stunning win-win-win for all of us. Thanks so much for checking my blog out and leaving this uplifting comment.
I have heard several “big” bloggers say that the secret to the growth of their blog was ensuring that their “best” posts were given as guest posts on bigger blogs. They felt that the wider their ideas were shared, the better – and the most important impression you make is the first. I have been blogging for 8 months and have been asked for some guest posts now – and am trying hard to keep a couple of “best post” ideas fresh for those opportunities.
Hi Annabel, I like the idea of looking at a guest post as a way of free prime time advertising than seeing it as giving away your best content. I think that’s a much bigger motivator for us to go through this process that sometimes causes a lot of stress. I also enjoyed your tips 1 though 6. It’s encouraging to know that there’s help out there. Thanks Annabel!
Hi I came over from Hulbert’s interview. Love your blog and advice. I also like the way you ask your readers to help you reach your dream. Very endearing!
That’s such an important point, I think: give your absolute best work away to other bloggers. It’s a weird concept, at first, but it really clicks whenever you start to think about it, doesn’t it?
Give your sweat, blood and tears to a new audience, and they’ll no doubt come to respect the quality of your work. That translates to new readers, and you’ll no doubt build a friendship with the other blogger, impressed as they are with the quality you’re contributing to their blog.
A simple concept, in the end, but one that seems at odds with the prevailing thinking of keeping your best work to yourself.
Great post, Annabel. And many kudos for getting your voice heard on such big-name blogs!
What a fantastic blog this is! Thanks for this. I am a new blogger and this is great information to have – I was just thinking about how I should start looking at guest posting and then I read this.
Fantastic advice on what I need to do.Love all your tips.
Your an inspiration Annabel.
Hi Annabel,
I had an opportunity to read about you in MaxBlogPress and wanted to see your insight in guest blogging from this post. Both are excellent and insightful. I am presently starting my own blog after being an active affilitate marketer for the last 5 years.
It’s funny how I did not connect the dots in my own situation and start the blog 5 years ago as well. Where would it be now? I have added myself to your name list and will be continuing to follow you while I try to expand my own followers in the affiliate and products niche.
I would appreciate it very much if you were able to take a moment out of your schedule and give my blog a quick look. I am pretty good at presenting a product to get sales, but I feel that a blog is an entirely new avenue and could use a professionals point of view. Any thoughts you could comment on would be appreciated immensly.
Continued success in your work and I look forward to reading more from your site. Have an excellent day and I look forward to your visit to my site!
Hi Annabel,
Great post – I cruised over from MaxBlogger where I picked up the original story line and strayed across out of curiosity.
Running a blog over a year and buckling down to some serious article writing, this has really given me some more food for thought. Hope there are enough hours in the day…LOL
Love the 2 step concept enabling you to slot your articles into many varied topics – will keep that in mind for future use.
To your success,
Joan
Annabel
This is a timeless post on guest posting. I like what you say about giving your best away. It makes perfect sense once you think of it as advertising or promoting your writing. Actually my very first post ever was a guest post on a non-monetized blogging tips blog that has a ton of authority. It came about when I left a comment regarding guest posting. The author of that blog liked my idea which was a “beginners view of blogging.” I outlined my idea submitted it and it was published. I haven’t done a guest post since that time only because I never gave serious thought to guesting again. Your post gives me great hope and I will follow step by step what you’ve outlined here. Thanks so much!
This is an excellent post and I understand how you made it on all the top blogs out there
The power of guest posting must not be underestimated! I learned this all to well from the two guest posts I did over at Famous Bloggers and one important thing that this also does is add an air of authority for you
Great post about guest blogging! I have been blogging for about 2 years and am looking for ways to get a few more readers. I kept coming back to the suggestion of offering guest posts, but had no idea how to start or what the etiquette was. This answers all my questions, thank you!
This is such a good idea! I don’t have anything more constructive to add but I find this very inventive and useful
xoxo Shanice
I see where you are coming from. With more than 10,000 subscribers you currently enjoy I must say these tips should be worth a try. Will definitely put this on my priority items for my blog. Thank you
What a great read, thanks Annabel. I’ve been lucky enough to be asked to guest-post by bloggers I like a bit now but your post has further encouraged me to be more proactive and and seek out other opportunities in my field which is work-wear fashion blogging. Currently it’s a small niche in Australia but already much more established in the US, hence the opportunities… thank you!
Nice tip. It’s more like being unique. Since guest posting trend is increasing, It’s always a good advice to Do something out of box and enjoy traffic via Guest posting.
Is it hard to get accepted as a guest poster or are most blogs open to it?
Fantastic post Annabel some rally great tips and inspiration there
Regards
Leanne
This is the best blog I’ve seen on this topic. Great job!
I?m so glad that the inetrnet allows free info like this!
I can no longer work due to heart disease and have been at home for almost two years and realized I should have been blogging all along. People have much more in common with each other than they think and blogging has the potential to become a profitable niche. If you love people and writing about something relevant i.e. your current hobbies or causes there is always someone out there seeking good advice and fresh ideas. The get rich quick blogging “gurus” are after one thing your money. However, I have found that talent, passion, persistence & patients can bring success to whatever niche you choose.
Very good site thank you so much for your time in writing the posts for all of us to learn about.
Thanks Annabel,
You’ve inspired me, I am here in Italy having moved last year starting afresh a bit like you were when you moved about, no local connections and clients yet.
Will follow the blogging advice here and the product you advise.
Gratitude, Grace
Thanks Annabel for this great post. Great job! I will visit your blog regularly.
Great Post!!! I want to see more this type of posts. So i will a regularly visitor in your blog.if you can please give me your Skype username.
Thanks.
Great post Annabel,
I’ve done the Jon Morrow guest blogging course and got a lot out of it. I’d recommend it to anyone.
I’m looking forward to working with you soon Annabel and discussing ideas to improve my blog.
