If you have a blog there is no doubt that you want to succeed with that blog.
No one starts a blog and feels it's OK to fail, right? We all want to succeed in whatever we are doing and blogging is no exception.
Since blogging forms a crucial part of your business, success becomes inevitable. You cannot just keep on working on your blog and yet let it fail.
Our hard work deserves all the success! But how can we make that happen?
Is working hard enough? I don’t think so.
If so, all the hard-working bloggers would be success stories right now. But sadly, that is not the case as we see it.
We witness a huge setback. Only a small amount of blogs that are started actually survive, let alone succeed.
And no one can deny that those bloggers did work hard. They didn’t purposefully let their blog fail by not working hard.
So something is missing, right? Something other than mere hard work is required in order to succeed.
Yes, there is. And over the years of experience, I’ve managed to find some of that hidden magic.
I will not claim that I’ve cracked the code. But I can confidently say that the following stuff that I’m going to share will help you succeed with your blogging efforts.
These are all the key ingredients that most bloggers miss! And that’s why, I strongly believe, most bloggers fail to succeed in spite of their hard work.
Let me get to the point right away.
Knowing your audience and knowing your WHY
Raise your hand if you started a blog on a niche that was either close to your heart, or you found profitable and started publishing content.
Alright, I’m not looking – go ahead and raise your hand.
Sadly, this is what most bloggers do and end up abandoning their blogs because they don’t see success even in the distant future.
The reason is this – they don’t know why they are blogging and who their potential customers are.
Identifying these two before you start to do anything with your blog is highly crucial for your blogging success.
Choosing a niche and publishing blog posts on certain topics in the niche is not blogging.
Your blog should have a purpose. It is a marketing tool that should align with your business goals.
Randomly publishing a few pieces of content won’t cut it!
So what should you do?
You must first understand your niche and your audience. You must also understand your why.
When you pick a niche, it is really important that you do your research.
You should identify the top players in your niche, identify the top keywords (not only for SEO but to understand what kind of content is well received, and is needed in the niche), identify the problems/challenges/pain points of your readers and so on.
You can start with an analytical tool like Semrush. Just type in your niche’s main keyword and start from there.
You can dig in deep to find out the big players in the niche, the topics that are popular and so on.
From there you should create your blogging plan.
Publishing is what makes a blog live. Your content is the life of your blog and without it, your blog will be dead.
And it is not about publishing when you have the time. Or when you are in the right mood!
It is about being consistent.
I just said consistent. But you are free to choose your publishing frequency.
It depends on how much you can handle. It can be once a week, or once every two days. Whatever it is, just make sure you do it consistently.
You have probably heard of this advice hundreds of times.
Every time you read a blog post that tells you to publish consistently you get inspired and decide to blog consistently.
But after a week the enthusiasm disappears. You get back to your casual publishing schedule, right?
So how can you implement this tip?
I can give you a lot of tips. But I consider two tips to be crucial and that matter the most.
1. Have an editorial calendar
Every time you hear this, you might start hunting for tools. But the key lies somewhere else (and it's not about the tools) – you have to create an editorial calendar that you’d actually use. I discuss this in this blog post.
2. Have a content idea bank
Having a running list of ideas will help you create content consistently. You can avoid the tragic situation of staring at the blank screen. Even if you are not ready to write, an idea bank will motivate you to write.
These two things have helped me stay consistent even during tough times (and I run multiple blogs).
With blogging, you cannot do it all alone. You may be a solopreneur – totally in-charge of your online business.
But when it comes to spreading the word, to gain crucial help and feedback, to stay motivated, to do business – you need people.
You always need more hands no matter how capable you are with handling stuff all alone.
Which is why you need to network . Your networking goal should not be to get help from the others.
You should genuinely connect with people in your niche. It's funny how I have to say it as if it is a rule – but this should come spontaneously for you!
Besides, connecting with people is fun. It doesn’t feel like work, right?
Of course. you should spend some time on this. You need tools and a system to constantly find new people to connect to. And I admit, this is not easy.
But I should also emphasize that it is totally worth it!
How can you implement this?
Basically, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for this.
It highly depends on the niche and your personal preference. Some people are active on Twitter and hence search for and connect with people on Twitter.
While some others prefer Google+. It could also be blog hopping and leaving meaningful comments and then connecting with the blogger.
Or it could be a combination of these things.
I know. Now this starts to sound spammy.
Whether you accept it or not, links play a major role in deciding your search engine presence.
And to build backlinks you don’t have to indulge in mass link building campaigns, or pay the SEO companies to do it for you or adopt shady techniques (and later get penalized by Google).
There are genuine, white-hat, humane ways to build backlinks.
Here are a few:
- Blog commenting
- Guest posting
- Submitting blog posts to content syndication sites
I can go on. But you get the idea!
